5 Tips for Safer Travel

By  Tom Peacock June 20, 2009

1. Learn everything you can about your destination beforehand

Find out everything from dress codes to expected social conduct, to the political situation and environmental conditions -- it could just save you from a heap of trouble.

2. Let people know where you're going

Leave phone numbers, passport numbers and any other important information, and as detailed an itinerary as you can work out, with a reliable friend or family member.

3. Consider registering with Foreign Affairs "Registration of Canadians Abroad" (ROCA)

4. Visit a travel medical clinic

Get any shots you might need and an assessment of specific health risks you might face, based on where you are going and how you are travelling.

5. Purchase travel insurance

And make sure that it's going to give you the coverage you need. If an emergency medical evacuation is necessary, the costs can be enormous.
