Heads up - New Tourist Visa for Indonesia

Starting February 1, 2004, the Government of Indonesia will implement a new visa system for tourists. The visa will cost US$25 and can be obtained when you arrive at major airports in Indonesia. It will be valid for a period of 30 days. No word on whether the visa will be extendable. Check with the nearest Indonesian embassy or consulate for more information.

Claiming Aeroplan frequent flyer points? Do it on-line.

According to a report on "frequentflyer.com", "Air Canada was widely (and rightly) lambasted when it imposed a CDN$25 "service fee" on July 1, 2003, for Aeroplan awards booked through its call center. The fee was to be extended to bookings on Air Canada's website as well, beginning Jan. 1, 2004."

Air Canada has decided not to collect the fee for online bookings. In their own words: "Aeroplan is happy to announce that members can continue to use our online booking services without any extra Aeroplan service fee."

Rumour has it...

The Scottish Executive has called in advertising experts to promote the country's tourism after an overseas marketing questionnaire found that many foreigners asked: "Does Scotland have any roads?" It is planning to launch a tourist slogan that highlights the country's modern, vibrant cities.

Top Tip: Pack your film carefully

Make sure that you pack your undeveloped film in your carry-on luggage. The new, stronger X-ray machines used in some U.S. and overseas airports to scan your checked bags can fog undeveloped film. The lower-dose X-ray machines used to screen carry-on bags are safe for film. The only exception is when your bag - and film - pass through the X-ray machine more than five times during an extended trip.

To reduce excessive exposure, you can try asking the security personnel to hand-check your film rather than putting it through for an X-ray, although not all airports will honor the request.
