Special Projects Manager
Full-time position

Verge magazine is seeking a Special Projects Manager. This person's primary role will be to assist with public engagement initiatives at Verge; however, s/he will have opportunities to assist with most aspects of the magazine's operation.
Working closely with the publishers, the Special Projects Manager will:
• manage existing Verge projects, including our annual Photo Contest and Two-Minute Tales contest;
• plan and execute promotions, special events, contests and other initiatives;
• represent Verge magazine at trade show and campus events;
• be responsible for a variety of general office tasks, including web updates, email newsletter management, communications with subscribers, and bookkeeping;
• assist with content planning, research, fact-checking, writing, copy-editing, and other production tasks.
Skills:
Candidates must demonstrate the following skills:
• Excellent research and written communications skills;
• Meticulous organization skills, strong attention to detail;
• Adaptability, an ability to manage multiple demanding projects simultaneously;
• Strong interpersonal skills, outgoing, comfortable on the phone and representing the organization in person;
• Self-starter, able to work well in a small team environment and independently;
• Ability to take the initiative to introduce and develop new ideas and solve problems;
• Good computer skills are essential. Experience with any of the following would be an asset: website management, social media, FileMaker Pro, QuickBooks, Excel, Photoshop;
• Must work well under pressure and be able to work to strict deadlines.
Demonstrated interest and experience in any of the following would be an advantage: travel, world issues, youth engagement, publishing, marketing. Experience working, studying, volunteering or living abroad, or an understanding of this industry, would be an asset.
Eligibility:
Applicants must have a university degree. A background in journalism is preferred and an interest in the business aspects of publishing is an asset.
Conditions:
This is a full-time position, to begin no later than June 15, 2010. After an initial training period, the successful applicant may be able to telecommute for up to three days per week. The position will require, on average, one to two days per week in our office, which is located in Peterborough, Ontario.
