In an effort to learn more about the country I spent a semester studying in, Wales, I took a trip to Barry Island. For families and friends it's a place to go and relax on the beach for an afternoon. For boat owners, Watch House Bay provides a place to hide out in between tidal changes. I took the low tide as an opportunity to view the area from a point of view not often experienced by many, especially those who are unfamiliar with tidal changes.

Tide changes along the River Usk are quick and drastic. During the periods of lower tide in Newport, Wales, fishermen and boat club members are forced to refrain from fishing expeditions, giving them an opportunity to repair their boats. Having no previous knowledge of tidal changes, it was a great pleasure to watch and learn about the ways they've adapted to such elements of nature. Even during the lower tide season, at higher tides the water level can increase to the point where it obstructs the walkway from dry land leading to the pontoon dock at the boat club. In order to meet Bill, Ron is seen here after paddling his way to the pontoon dock. A foreign concept to many is described here with the events of the tidal changes, and yet the image also communicates the comfort and ease that these gentlemen have found in their own routines at the boat club.

At the end of the day we were forced to take the last hydrofoil back to Naples, while Capri natives prepared for the upcoming sailing competition. The competition included a procession celebration of San Costanzo with sail boats, Campari and dancing shoes.

The Race

The hardest part is saying goodbye. My boyfriend had accompanied me to Italy until I was to begin my studies in Venice. We had expected to take the Vaporetto (water bus) to my new lodging area but the services were closed due to the rowing race. We took a taxi instead and saw the most stunning view of the race alongside the rowers.
