Zalina grew up in Toronto and began her career in journalism at the York University campus newspaper. Before joining Verge in 2010, she worked for a documentary festival, a non-profit organization and various magazines and newspapers. Zalina has had some eclectic travel experiences, including reporting for a newspaper on the island of Molokai in Hawaii.

Arrival Survival

Returning travellers are often surprised to find that the process of reintegration is rife with challenges – and ripe with opportunities.
Today is national coffee day! While you sip your decaf, non-fat soy latte, think about the fact that over 80 percent of Canadians drink coffee regularly, according to the Coffee Association of Canada, and in 2008 sales of coffee amounted to 16 percent of non-alcoholic beverage sales in Canada. So this just leaves the question: do you know where your coffee comes from?
What would you do if you were denied your right to study abroad?
If you're moving abroad to work, either independently or because of a transfer within your company, what things are you hoping for in order to be a happy expat?
How to address the millions of Canadians who live abroad? Should government policies support our diasporas, integrate them into Canadian society and encourage them to return one day? And should we be concerned about expatriates returning to Canada after their retirement and benefiting from a healthcare system that they haven't paid into sufficiently?
It's easy to think about studying or volunteering abroad in terms of people from the West going away.
Why are students on this side of the pond less likely to take a year off before college?
A little bird just told me - actually, it was the Banff Squirrel - that Parks Canada just turned 100 years old!
Cross-cultural interactions could be so well-served by more diversification.
